Caffeine and L-Theanine: The One Stack With Decent Evidence

Most nootropic stacks are a list of ingredients at doses nobody studied. This one is two cheap compounds with actual human trials.

The focus-supplement aisle is mostly proprietary blends of a dozen compounds at undisclosed amounts. Strip it back to what has been tested in humans at known doses and repeatedly measured, and you are left with a short list. Caffeine plus L-theanine is at the top of it.

What each one does

Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors. Adenosine accumulates while you are awake and produces the felt sense of sleepiness; caffeine occupies the receptors so that signal is not received. It reliably improves alertness, reaction time and endurance performance. It also raises heart rate and, in a lot of people at higher doses, produces jitteriness and anxiety.

L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea. On its own it produces a mild calming effect without sedation, and increases alpha-wave activity — an EEG pattern associated with relaxed alertness.

Why the combination is interesting

Taken together, theanine appears to blunt the unwanted edge of caffeine — the jitter, the raised blood pressure, the anxiety — while the alertness benefit remains. A set of small human trials found the combination improved attention-switching and sustained-attention tasks more than caffeine alone, and reduced self-reported tiredness without the accompanying tension.

The effects are real but modest. This is a noticeably smoother version of caffeine, not a different category of experience. Anyone selling it as a cognitive transformation is overselling it.

The reason to know about this stack is not that it is powerful. It is that it is cheap, well characterized, and the only thing on the focus shelf where you can name the doses used in the research.

The doses used

Trials generally use caffeine 50–200 mg with L-theanine 100–400 mg, most often in roughly a 1:2 ratio — 100 mg caffeine to 200 mg theanine is the common starting point.

For reference: a cup of brewed coffee is roughly 95 mg of caffeine, an espresso shot about 65 mg. Tea contains theanine naturally, but at maybe 25 mg a cup — well under the studied amounts, which is why matcha's reputation for calm alertness is directionally right and quantitatively small.

Theanine is water-soluble, has a good safety profile in trials, and does not appear to accumulate.

What to watch for

Tolerance is caffeine's problem, not theanine's. Regular use blunts the alertness effect within about a week as adenosine receptors upregulate. Theanine does not fix that. If you want caffeine to keep working, use it on the days it matters rather than every day.

The half-life is the real cost. Caffeine's half-life is roughly five to six hours in most adults, meaning a 2 p.m. coffee still has about half its caffeine in you at 8 p.m. Caffeine measurably reduces deep sleep even when it does not stop you falling asleep, and poor sleep costs more focus than any stack returns. A hard cutoff eight hours before bed is the highest-leverage change most people can make here.

Skip the pre-blended pill if it hides its doses. The entire advantage of this combination is that you can specify the amounts. Buy the two separately, or buy a product that states both clearly — a "Focus Blend, 800 mg" defeats the purpose. Same label rules as everything else.

The short version

100 mg caffeine with 200 mg L-theanine, on days you need it rather than daily, and nothing after early afternoon. Modest, real, and about as evidence-backed as this category gets.
